Some thoughts about Autism

By Sarah Reilly - Publisher of Macaroni Kid Springfield April 15, 2021

"Though devastating at first, Autism isn't the end of the world.  It is the beginning of a whole new one"

I share my thoughts on this very often.  As the mother of five amazing children, three on the spectrum, I can safely say I have some authority on the subject.  Autism is NOT the end of the world, yes you momentarily feel your entire world crash down around you, some days you are seemingly putting out more fires than you can keep up with and sometimes that is not a metaphor. (The infamous birthday cake fire of 2014 comes to mind)  Very few things can be classified as "the end of the world".  Yes it sure as heck feels like it, you will experience so many emotions initially and throughout your journey that it will feel like the world is over, because the world and family you created in your mind has come to an end.  That just means you get a chance to do something not many people do, you get to rebuild that world any way you want.  You are thrown into a fire that you will survive and you will be forged into a stronger, more compassionate and absolutely badass parent.  Embrace it.
