This weekend our family took a little daytrip or not so little depending on your definition. We are blessed to have family up in Maine so we always have great suggestions from them for places to bring the kids. This past weekend I drove up with our youngest two boys at the crack of dawn to visit the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, ME. It is the world's oldest and largest museum of mass transit vehicles. Due to Covid-19 and local mandates tickets do need to be purchased in advanced on their website. They have a wonderful tour of trolleys and busses made in last 120 years, from around the globe. And for the fall they have a pumpkin patch! After we arrived we were given a tour of some of the collection, learning where the vehicle was used, what type of trolley it was and some little facts about the vehicle. Following our tour we boarded a mid-century trolley and traveled about a mile and a half. The kids had a blast as we moved down the track in a surprisingly smooth ride. We were given some more fascinating information about the particular trolley in which we traveled and the history of trolley parks as well. We then pulled up to a platform next to the field of pumpkins are were told we would be playing a special game. The game was called "pick a pumpkin in ten minutes or less" Our boys took this game very seriously and dashed into the field grabbing the first pumpkins they saw. We then enjoyed a quiet ride back to the station where they had an arts and crafts center set up to paint our pumpkins. We declined to do this as I did not want paint all over my car. We took a small detour on the way home to drive down the beach in York where I stayed as a kid, took the boys to see Nubble Light and then enjoyed a leisurely drive home. If you kids enjoy long car rides as much as ours do I suggest throwing on a great audiobook and driving up to Maine for a day. The Seashore Trolley Museum is hidden gem that our family wholeheartedly recommends.
